Is the Euro-zone as 'Solid' as Trichet Claims

With the market selling off on increasing concerns over the budget deficits in Portugal, Spain and Greece, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet has struggled to convince investors the euro region should not be punished for Greece’s budget problems. Trichet said the economy of the 16-nation euro area is solid and its budget shortfall will probably be smaller than those of the U.S. and Japan this year. The Euro-zone is due to release its 4Q09 GDP numbers on Friday 12th February 10…

Find out how optimistic the U.S consumer is
Over in the U.S., data on the U.S. consumer’s confidence levels in February will be released from various sources.

The IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism will kick off the confidence stats on Tuesday 9th February 10, while December’s Wholesale Inventories will also be available. The ABC Consumer Confidence and Bloomberg Global Confidence will be available the following day, alongside U.S.’ December Trade Balance numbers on Wednesday10th February 10. The final confidence index will be released by University of Michigan on Thursday11th February 10. Advance Retail Sales for January and Initial Jobless Claims over the last week will also be out on Thursday.


Is China’s tightening policy working?
Given the recent credit tightening policy initiatives aimed largely at curbing the property bubble in China, investors will be particularly interested in the level of housing prices reflected in China NDRC Property Price Index available from Wednesday10th February 10to Friday12th February 10. For prices of all other goods and services in China, investors can look forward to January’s Producer Price Index, Consumer Price Index and Purchasing Price Index on Thursday11th February 10.

Neighbouring Japan will also have their January Domestic CGPI released on Wednesday10th February 10. December’s Machine Orders are also out on the same day.
